The League for the Hard of Hearing is a non-profit, hearing and human service agency located in Fort Lauderdale. Since 1910, our mission has been to help deaf and hard of hearing people without regard for their, mode of communication, age or ability to pay. We are a participating United Way Agency. We provide hearing aids, counseling, case management, advocacy, and offer hope to people with no resources. No one has ever been turned away that has needed services.    We provide walk-in hearing screenings every Thursday and remote hearing screenings at health fairs and community centers when requested. The League for the Hard of Hearing is a member of the Elder Services Resource Network, Broward Coalition on Aging, the Broward Aging Alliance, and numerous other organizations dedicated to help seniors. This past year we celebrated 25 years of service to Broward County residents.       We participate in all senior health activities including health fairs, expos, and information fairs.  We have given presentations to the Broward County Commission and most of Broward Cities to raise awareness of people who have difficulty hearing or speaking. We have received numerous county and city proclamations for our work as we are the only non-profit hearing and human rehabilitation service in Broward County.           One of our programs that impacts Florida residents in an immediate and positive way is the Florida Telecommunications Relay Inc. (FTRI) NO COST Special Telephone Equipment Program.   Florida residents over three years of age, that have a hearing or speaking difficulty are entitled to receive special telephone equipment to communicate independently, AT NO COST. The equipment and replacements (when necessary) are AT NO COST, are paid by the 15 cents surcharge found on all Florida landline bills. The 15 cent surcharge also pays for the relay service in Florida. The relay service allows deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired people have normal telephone conversations with hearing individuals like us.                               Here are examples of the FTRI Special Telephone Equipment that we offer:    There are over 140,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Broward County so chances are you already know someone that this program could help. A national audiologist association reports that one out of six people have some form of disability that interferes with their use of the telephone. 50% of seniors have already experienced enough hearing loss to qualify for the FTRI Equipment Program. Having an Amplified telephone or other specialized telephone would make it easier for them to communicate their needs, access services, and you would not have to yell into the phone when speaking to them.   Obtaining a hearing telephone is a simple process and takes less than a ½ hour which includes filling out an application forms and receiving training. Telephones can be picked up at our office or at one of our outreach locations located in libraries and community centers throughout Broward County. There is even a special homebound service available when a doctor notifies us that their patient is medically homebound and hard of hearing.         This is a wonderful program and that offers hope of telephone independence to those who have lost their ability to hear or speak. Distribution of equipment includes installation and operation training.                           The League for the Hard of Hearing's mission is to improve the quality of life for infants, children and adults with all degrees of hearing loss. We accomplish our mission by providing hearing rehabilitation and human services for people who are hard of hearing or deaf, and their families, regardless of age, ability to pay, or mode of communication, and by striving to empower consumers to achieve their potential.
