Occupying a total area of 71,299.64 square miles, the State of Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest part of the United States. The majority of the state’s population of 6.4 million people are concentrated in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Area.
Just over 11% of the state's population is over age 65 and just over 50% is female. More than 87% of the population over age 25 are high school graduates and 27.7% of them hold a bachelor’s degree.
The enormous natural resources of water and forests hugely benefit the economy of Washington. Irrigation, transportation, and fishing industries thrive in the state. The main agricultural products include wheat, corn, potatoes, apricots, onions, grapes, vegetables, nuts, sheep, poultry, cattle, and dairy goods. Washington is also the leading producer of pears, apples, and sweet cherries. The Wine industry is also well developed in the state.
The cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett are the industrial and commercial centers of Washington. A large number of computer software, biotechnology, electronics, and jet aircraft manufacturers are based in this area. The state has rich deposits of aluminum and magnesium ores, as well as minerals like cement, stone, sand and gravel, and diatomite. Tourism is also important to Washington.
The statistical records of January 2009 indicate that the civilian workforce of Washington totals more than 3.5 million people, of whom 7.8% are unemployed. The major sectors in the state’s non-farm labor market are Education & Health Services (12%), Manufacturing (9%), Professional & Business Services (11%), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities 18%), Leisure & Hospitality (9%), and Government (19%).
