The state and sovereignty of Oklahoma is located in the southwest region of the United States. It is the 20th largest state in the US with a total area of 69,898.19 square miles. With more than 3,617,316 residents, Oklahoma is the 28th most populous state in the United States.

As per the 2005 estimates, 13.2% of the population was above the age of 65 and women made up over 50% of the state’s population. Of the people who are above the age of 25, 80.6% were high school graduates and 20.3% held at least a Bachelor’s degree.

Agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to the economy of Oklahoma. Cotton was formerly the leading cash crop of the state. However, it has been succeeded recently by wheat. Livestock produces higher income than that of crops. After the discovery of many minerals in the state, including coal, mining has become an important industry. Petroleum industry flourished after the first well was drilled in 1888. Since then, Oklahoma City and Tulsa have become a great source for natural gas and petroleum. Manufacturing also contributes significantly to the economy of Oklahoma. There are many factories in the state which process local foods and minerals. The major manufacturing industries include non-electrical machinery and fabricated metal products.

According to the data of January 2009, the civilian workforce in Oklahoma reached nearly 1.8 million people, of which 5% were unemployed. The chief sectors of the non-farm labor market in Oklahoma include Manufacturing (9.04%), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (18.17%), Professional and Business Services (11.59%), Leisure and Hospitality (9.24%), Education (12.46%) and Government (20.57%).
