The state of Ohio is in the American midwest. It covers a total area of 44,824.90 square miles and is the 34th largest state in terms of land area. Ohio has the highest population density of any state outside of the Eastern Seaboard. With more than 11.4 million residents, it is the 7th largest U.S. state in terms of population.
According to 2005 estimates, 13.3% of the population were above the age of 65 and 51.3% were women. Of the residents above the age of 25, 83.0% were high school graduates and more than 21% held a Bachelor’s degree.

It is also a historic hub for ceramic and glass industries. Most of the income of Ohio is derived from commerce and manufacturing. The state is also home to extensive farmland. Corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, cattle, hogs, and dairy items are raised. Mining is important particularly in Toledo and Cleveland which handle iron and copper ore, coal, oil, and other finished materials.
As of January 2009, the civilian workforce in Ohio is about 9.7 million people, of which 8.8% were unemployed. Major sectors of Ohio’s non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (12.48%), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (19.3%), Professional and Business Services (12.23%), Leisure and Hospitality (9.5%), Education (15.8%) and Government (15.01%).
