Located in the midwest, Missouri covers an area of 69,704.31 square miles. It is the 18th most populous state in the nation with 5.8 million residents. Missouri is made up of 114 counties and only one independent city. The four largest urban areas in the state are St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, and Columbia.
According to 2005 data, 13.3% of the population is over 65 and 51.1% are women. Among the people who were above the age of 25, 81.3% are high school graduates and more than 21% earned at least a Bachelor’s degree.
Missouri's economy is mainly dependent on industry primarily in the production of aerospace and transportation equipment. Other important industries include food products, chemicals, printing and publishing, machinery, fabricated metals, and electrical equipment. St. Louis is a hub for the manufacture of metals and chemicals. Kansas City is famous for the manufacture of vending machines, and cars and trucks assembly. Mining is also important in Missouri and some of the chief minerals produced include coal, cement, stone, zinc, and lead. Agriculture is also important to the state and, with over 100,000 farms, the state ranks 2nd to Texas. It produces valuable farm products like soybeans, corn, cattle, hogs, wheat, and dairy items. Tourism in Missouri is fast developing.
In January of 2009, the civilian workforce in Missouri totaled about 3,0 million people, of which 8% were unemployed. Major sectors of Missouri’s non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (9.9%), Trade, Transportation and Utilities ( 19.4%), Professional and Business Services (12.3%), Leisure and Hospitality (10%), Education and Health Services (14.3%) and Government (16.2%).
