Surrounded by the States of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, Maryland is located in the Middle Atlantic region of the United States of America. It occupies a total area of 12,406.68 square miles, and is home to 5,618,344 people, of whom 51.6% are women. Central Maryland is the most densely populated part of the state with greater Baltimore having the highest concentration of residents.
Over 11% of the state’s population is over 65 years of age. Maryland has a high literacy rate - 83.8% of the people over the age of 25 are high school graduates, and 31.4% of them have at least a bachelor’s degree.
The economy of Maryland was largely dominated by the fishing industry. Though now on a decline, seafood still yields a very high income from large catches of oysters, crabs, fin fish, clams, and shellfish. Maryland has one of the longest waterfronts in the nation. Agricultural products like corn, tobacco, soybeans, hay, and several greenhouse items contribute to the State’s income. Livestock and dairy products are also important.
However, manufacturing is now the dominant industry in Maryland. Food products, primary metals, chemicals, transportation equipment, and electrical and electronic machinery are among the leading manufacturers. With over 350 biotechnology firms, Maryland is considered a life sciences hub in the US. Other industries like shipping, printing and publishing, and tourism also flourish in the state.
As of January 2009, Maryland has a civilian workforce of 2,979.8 thousand people, of which about 6.2% were unemployed. The leading non-farm industries in the State are Education & Health Services (15%), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (17%), Professional & Business Services (15%), Government (18%), and Leisure & Hospitality (9%).
