The Alaskan economy is dominated by commercial fishing and the oil and gas industries. Vast reserves of oil and natural gas were discovered near Prudhoe Bay in 1968, and currently, petroleum extraction contributes more than 80% of the State’s revenues. Dutch Harbor and Anchorage are the major fishing ports, and the state leads the nation in the export of seafood including shrimp, crab, salmon, herring, halibut, and cod. Though agriculture is not among the prosperous industries in Alaska, farm commodities such as potatoes, dairy and greenhouse goods are produced there. The food processing industry is the state’s largest manufacturing enterprise. Lumbering and fur-tapping are among the other important industries.
As indicated by the per capita income, Alaska is 6th position among the wealthiest States in the US. It has a civilian labor force of 359.2 thousand people, of whom just 2.1% are unemployed. The major sectors in the non-farm labor market include Professional & Business Services (8%), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (20%), Government (26%), Education & Health Services (12%), and Leisure & Hospitality (10%).
