West Virginia is in the southeast and is bordered by Ohio on the northwest, Kentucky on the southwest, Virginia on the southeast, Pennsylvania and Maryland on the northeast. West Virginia covers a total area 24,229.76 square miles and has about 1.8 million residents.

According to the 2005 estimates, 15.3% had reached the age of 65 or above. Women made up 51.1% of the state’s population. Among the residents above the age of 25, 75.2% were high school graduates and 14.8% held a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.

Farming is not extensive in West Virginia but it contributes significantly to the economy of the state. Apples, hay, peaches, corn, and tobacco are the major crops. Broiler chickens, cattle, and dairy products also substantially add to the state’s income. West Virginia is rich in natural resources. It is the nation’s leading producer of bituminous coal. Other important products include natural gas, stone, cement, salt, and oil. Manufacturing in the state includes primary and fabricated metals and machinery. In recent years, several federal offices and facilities have been established in West Virginia, and government service has become a growing source of employment.

As of January 2009, West Virginia’s civilian workforce totaled approximately 799.1 thousand people, of which 5.3% were unemployed. The chief sectors of West Virginia’s non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (7.18 %), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (18.5 %), Professional and Business Services (7.8%), Leisure and Hospitality (9.5%), Education (15.5%) and Government (19.4%).
