The state of North Dakota is situated in the Midwestern and Western regions of the United States. North Dakota is the 19th largest state in the US by terms of area and covers a total of 70,699.79 square miles. Yet, it is only the 48th most populous, with 639,715 residents.

Per the Census, 14.7% of the population in North Dakota is above the age of 65. Of the people who are above the age of 25, 83.9% have earned a high school diploma and 22% have earned a Bachelor’s degree.

After the discovery of oil in 1951, petroleum has become a leading mineral product in the state. Mining significantly contributes to the economy of North Dakota. The other important mining products are sand and lime, gravel, and salt. Agriculture, however, remains a primary source of revenue for the state. Grain, meat, and dairy products are important to cities like Grand Forks, Fargo, Minot, and Bismarck. Tourism has become a thriving industry and has become the 3rd most important source of income in the state, behind mineral production and agriculture.

According to the data of January 2009, the civilian workforce in North Dakota totalled only 371.5 thousand people, of which 4.2% were unemployed. Major sectors of North Dakota’s non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (6.59 %), Trade, Transportation and Utilities ( 21.5%), Professional and Business Services (8.17%), Leisure and Hospitality (9.2%), Education ( 14.28%) and Government (20.83%).
