Montana ranks 44th in terms of population and has 935,670 inhabitants. It has the third lowest population density in the US. The economy of Montana is chiefly based on wheat farming, ranching, oil and coal in the east. Tourism, lumber, and hard rock mining is popular in the west. The region in and around Montana has large mineral deposits which include gold, platinum, copper, silver, zinc, lead, and manganese. The eastern region of the state is famous for its petroleum and natural gas. The leading industries in Montana manufacture processed foods, forest products, and refined petroleum. Agriculture also contributes significantly to the economy of the state. The main crops are wheat, barley, sugar beets, and hay. Tourism is a fast developing industry in the state and millions of tourists visit annually.

As of January 2009, the civilian workforce in Montana totaled about 503.9 thousand people, of which 5.6% were unemployed. Major sectors of Montana’s non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (4.3 %), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (20.2%), Professional and Business Services (8.8%), Leisure and Hospitality (13.5%), and Government (20.6%).
