Kansas is a Midwestern state situated in the central region of the United States. Encompassing a total area of 82,276.84 square miles, Kansas is 15th largest state in the nation in terms of land area. Kansas is comprised of 105 counties and 628 cities.
Read more / Hide ...According to the 2005 estimate, Kansas had a population of 2,744,687, of which 13.0% were above the age of 65. More than 50% of the population was made up of women. Of the people who were over the age of 25, 86% held a high school diploma, and over 25% held a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
Historically, Kansas has been an agricultural state. Recently the manufacturing and service industries have surpassed agriculture as income-producers and contributors to the economy. Farming is still important to the economy as it is a leading producer of wheat, grain sorghum, corn, soybeans, and sunflowers. Meatpacking and dairy industries are the chief economic activities of the state. Food processing was ranked as the 3rd largest industry in the state in the 1990s. The two other leading industries of the state are manufacture of transportation equipment and computer machinery. Kansas is also a chief producer of crude petroleum and has large reserves of natural gas and helium. The state was once part of a great shallow sea, and has commercially important salt deposits.
As of January 2009, Kansas had a civilian workforce of 1,508.2 thousand people, of which 5.8% were unemployed. Major sectors of its non-farm labor market include Manufacturing (12.9%), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (18.9%), Professional and Business Services (10.6%), Leisure and Hospitality (8.4%), Education (12.7%) and Government (12.29%).
