The State of Arkansas is located in the Southern region of the U.S.. Bordered on the eastern side by the Mississippi river, the state has a diverse geography with the presence of mountainous regions, interior highlands, as well as lowlands. After the 1970s, Arkansas experienced an economic boom with quite a few global companies like Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods, and J.B. Hunt establishing their headquarters in the northwest part of the State. Tourism also has a significant influence on the economy of Arkansas.

As per the labor statistics of January 2009, the civilian workforce of Arkansas totaled 1,370.0 thousand people, as just 6.4% of whom are unemployed. The State’s non-farm industries currently employ 1,188.6 thousand people across the sectors of Manufacturing (14%), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (20%), Government (18%), Education & Health Services (13%), Professional & Business Services (9%), and Leisure & Hospitality (8%).
