According to the 2005 census, 49.9% of the population of Arizona was female, and 12.8% of the population was above 65 years of age. 81.0% of the population were high school graduates, while 23.5% held Bachelor’s degrees.

The state has a thriving agricultural industry focused on growing and exporting crops such as cotton, broccoli, lettuce and sorghum. Other important farm products include dairy products, cattle and calves. The manufacturing industry is another significant source of the state’s revenue especially in the fields of food processing, printing and publishing, transportation, aerospace and electronics. Arizona is a rapidly expanding state, so the construction industry is almost always flourishing there.

Tourism is another significant industry for the state’s population. Military facilities in the state, such as, Fort Huachuca, and the Yuma Proving Grounds also contribute to a large portion of the income of the state. Mining is quite a profitable industry too; with the state being a leading producer of copper in the country (something that earned it the nickname of Copper State). Sand, gravel, molybdenum, and cement are the other principal products related to the mining industry.

According to 2008 studies, 2624.7 thousand residents of the Arizona were engaged in non-farm industries. The total civilian workforce consisted of 3,158.7 thousand people, of which 5.9 % of the population was unemployed. The chief sectors of the non-farm labor market in Arizona are Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (19%), Professional & Business Services (14%), Education & Health Services (12%), Leisure & Hospitality (10%), and Government (17%).
