HVAC mechanics install, maintain and repair various types of climate control systems such as heating, refrigeration, ventilation and air conditioning systems. These systems are found in a wide range of venues from residential to commercial to industrial and warehouse. HVAC mechanics, or technicians, typically specialize by working primarily on heating systems or refrigeration systems. They often further specialize in a specific type of equipment, such as solar heating systems. The mechanic must have knowledge of all the components of a system and be able to systematically diagnose problems using the standard testing equipment and tools.

Only some states require licensure as a HVAC mechanic and the requirements across states and municipalities vary greatly. To become a HVAC mechanic, most candidates complete an educational program that is between 6 months and 2 years of study. These programs can be found at local community or junior colleges, trade schools and technical schools as well as the military. Most choose to enter an apprenticeship program whereby they get paid during their training and gain the necessary field work experience to become proficient.
