Workforce50.com charts a new course for the SeniorJobBank
BOSTON, MA - September 7, 2007 - NHC Group, Inc. is excited to debut the new Workforce50.com at AARP's Life@50+ Conference & Exposition at the Boston Convention Center. The company has announced that the SeniorJobBank (www.seniorjobbank.org), its popular online employment service for the over-50 workforce, is now operating as the new Workforce50.com. "There is no better, or more appropriate, place or audience to share our enthusiasm with than AARP's national event," according to Gene Burnard, Publisher.
Workforce50 will take the legacy of the SeniorJobBank to a new level and will do so with an updated name, contemporary look and many new features. Workforce50 is the successor to a service that was founded in 1975 to match older workers with local employers in Orlando, FL. It launched as a nationwide Web service in 1999 and was acquired and upgraded by NHC Group, Inc. in 2005. The mission-- to find and promote quality employment opportunities for America's older workers-- remains the same but is even more compelling today than in the 1970s.
Much has changed since those early days. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. labor force is expected to reach 162.1 million in 2014, an increase of nearly 15 million, even though the largest segment of the population, the "baby boomers", begin transitioning into what are typically the retirement years. Trends evidenced from the late 1980s strongly suggest that this age group will continue to participate in the workforce at a much higher rate than reported historically. In other words, more people are working longer and there is no evidence that this is a cyclical or short-term economic occurrence.
Hiring patterns and retention initiatives have yet to keep pace with the aging of the workforce, however. Youth is still revered and sought after in American culture and many organizations still cling to the notion that workers over the age of 50 are approaching retirement. This outdated view of employment in America can't change fast enough for the energetic, talented crop of over-50s who want or need to work, progress in or even change their careers and be challenged.
It was the relentless feedback from these very job seekers visiting the SeniorJobBank that led to the name change. As Gene Burnard, the Publisher of Workforce50, muses, "These days, few people in their 50s, 60s or even 70s relate to the label 'senior'. We heard from them loud and clear that our former name cast them as stereotypical old folks ready to retire mentally and physically. Wow, is that far from reality!"
The team at Workforce50 is working to raise awareness with organizations that this highly motivated and under-utilized talent pool is ready, willing and able to make valuable contributions to their employers. The goal is to have small and medium size organizations visible and recruiting on Workforce50 alongside the larger national companies.
